Dr. Megan Maxwell: An Analytical Approach To Pet Behaviour Management and Training

In this talk, behavioural psychologist and Certified Applied Animal Behaviourist Dr. Megan Maxwell will discuss a behavioural approach to pet behaviour management and training. She will explain the important job of assessing the function of behaviour before attempting to treat it, and will describe the role that triggers and consequences play in maintaining problem behaviour. She also will discuss the role that owners can play in accidentally causing or contributing to problem behaviour.

Dr. Maxwell’s research interests include investigating how animals, including dogs, learn under conditions of positive reinforcement. In particular, she has examined the effects of signaled and unsignaled delays to reinforcement on canine learning and behaviour. She has also examined methods for reducing responding by dogs using extinction, non-contingent reinforcement, and the differential reinforcement of other behaviour.
